What is semantic memory?
Memory for general information.
What is episodic memory?
Memory for personal events.
What are the three key processes involved in memory?
- Encoding- Storage- Retrieval
What is encoding?
Forming a memory code (getting information in).
What is storage?
Maintaing encoded information in memory over time.
What is retrieval?
Recovering information from memory stores (getting information out).
What does attention have to do with memory?
You generally need to pay attention to information if you intend to remember it.
What is attention?
Focusing awareness on a narrowed range of stimuli or events.
When are stimuli screened out early?
During sensory input.
When are stimuli screen out late?
After the brain has processed the meaning of significance of the input.
What is filtering?
Screening out most potential stimuli while allowing a select few to pass through into conscious awareness.
What happens when attention is divided?
- The human brain can effectively handle only one attention-consuming task at a time. - When people multitask, they are switching their attention back and forth among tasks, rather than processing them simultaneously.
What is effortful processing?
When you pick up information because you are intentionally attempting to do so.
What is automatic processing?
When you pick up information without your intending to do so.
What types of encoding produce deeper processing with verbal information?
- Structural- Phonemic- Semantic
