Sex

• the mixing of masculine and feminine characteristics • IE: fashion statements • Describing something that is neither masculine or feminine • Not necessarily trying to project the other gender, but find some means of balance
Gender
• A social distinction, not biological distinction • A social status based on gender roles performed in society • Transgendered: gender identity does not match assigned gender • Psychiatric term: Gender Identity Disorder
Sexual counterrevolution
• conservative call for “family values” • Against practices associated with the spread of sexually transmitted diseases People are limiting number of sexual partners
Pornography
• sexually explicit material that causes sexual arousal. Its value causes debate. • Possession of child porn is an offence • Some claim it is a power issue – men are seen as more dominant and powerful • Others claim it is a matter of free speech
Prostitution
• Selling of sexual services include • Call girls and boys: elite workers who arrange own dates by telephone • Sex workers in “massage parlours” • Streetwalkers are the most victimized • Sexual Violence: Sexual Assault and Date Rape • Sexual assault: a violent act that uses sex to hurt humiliate or control another person
