What are the four principal types of tissue?
1. Epithelial
2. Connective
3. Muscle
4. Nervous
What are the two major subdivisions of extracellular fluid?
1. Intersitial fluid, which fills microscopic spaces

2. Plasma, the liquid portion of blood
What are the three principal types of cell junctions?
1. Tight, fluid-tight seals between cells
2. Anchoring, fasten cells to one another or the extracellular matrix
3. Communication (gap), allow electrical or chemical signals to pass from cell to cell
What are the two major types of epithelial tissue?
1. Covering and lining epithelium
2. Glandular epithelium
What are ten features of epithelial tissue?
1. Consists of tightly packed cells
2. Arranged in continuous sheets
3. Has an apical surface and a basal surface
4. Many cell junctions
5. Avascular
6. Adheres firmly to nearby connective tissue
7. Has a nerve supply
8. High capacity for renewal
9. Derived from all three primary germ layers
10. Many functions
Cell shape: squamus
Flattened and scale-like
Cell shape: cuboidal
Cube-shaped
Cell shape: columnar
Tall and cylindrical
Cell shape: transitional
Readily change shape and are found where there is a great degree of distention in the body
What are the 5 general features of connective tissues?
1. Consist of three basic elemets: cells, ground substance, and fibers
2. Do no occur on free surfaces
3. Has a nerve supply
4. Highly vascular
5. The matrix is usually secreted by the connective tissue cells
What is areolar connective tissue?
One of the most widely distributed connective tissue in the body. It combines with adipose tissue to form the subcutaneous layer
What is adipose tissue?
A loose connective tissue in which the cells are specialized for storage of triglycerides
What is reticular connective tissue?
Consists of fine interlacing reticular fibers and reticular cells. Helps bind together the cells of smooth muscle.
What is dense connective tissue?
Contains more densely packed and thicker fibers but considerably fewer cells than loose connective tissue.
What is dense regular connective tissue?
Bundles of collagen fibers have a regular, parallel arrangement that confers great strength.
