What are some qualities of arteries(5)?
Carry mostly oxygenated blood, thick muscular walls, high pressure, greater contractility, pulse wave only felt over superficial bone.
Where are arterial pulses palpable? Name them (10)
Over a bone. Temporal, carotid, brachial, ulnar, radial, popliteal, dorsalis pedis, posterior tibial, femoral and apical
What is the tunica adventitia? Tunica media? Tunica intima?
Outer stronger layer composed of connective tissue, allow vessels to stretch. Middle layer with smooth muscle, thicker in arteries than veins. Inner layer, smooth endothelium covered with elastic tissues.
Which artery is used when calculating ABI?
Peroneal artery
What are characteristics of veins?
Run parallel to arteries, more abundant than arteries, usually contain deoxygenated blood, low pressure, more distensible, not as stretchy. Capitance vessels
What do veins have than arteries do not?
Valves
What is phlebitis?
Inflammation of vein. Can be from site of an IV, redness.
What layers exist in a vein? What two types of veins are there?
Tunica adventitia, media and intima. Deep and superficial veins
Which vein is blood samples taken from?
Median basilica vein.
What are mechanisms to promote blood flow? (3)
Skeletal muscle, pressure gradient created by breathing, intra-luminal (Semi-lunar) valves in veins.
What is the difference between a deep and superficial vein?
Deep veins are well supported by tissue and muscle. Superficial veins are smaller and located subcutaneously, poor support.
What are functions of the lymphatic system(5)?
Conserve fluid and plasma proteins, immune function, filter and purify lymph, engulf pathogens, antigens that are removed are presented to lymphocytes.
How does the lymphatic system drain?
Right lymphatic duct drains the right arm and superior to diaphragm. Left lymphatic duct [THORACIC DUCT] drains everything else
Which lymph nodes are palpable?
Head and neck, axillary, epitrochlear, inguinal.
What is a fascia compartment? How many are there in the human body? What else in inside the compartments?
Bandlike membranes separating muscles. There are 46 anatomical compartments in the human body. Blood vessels and lymphatics
