What type of SCBA does cfd use?
Drager Airboss PSS 100 Plus with sentinel II system. Open circuit compressed air.
CFD requires FFs to use SCBA...
All personnel who respond to and are expected to funtion in:
1 contaminated atmosphere (toxic or O2 deficient)
2 an atmosphere where it is likely it may become contaminated
When must a FF check their assigned SCBA?
1 At the beginning of each shift,
2 when rendering equipment ready for use
3 After every use
When can a FF remove their SCBA?
Only after the air has been proved safe by analysis of air with an approved monitor.
What is a PASS?
Personal Alarm Safety System
This component will help signal/locate a downed FF.
The proper use of SCBA will assist a FF in
1 Rescue operations
2 determining the best point of attack
3 reaching the seat of the fire quickly
4 reducing damage due to the indiscriminate use of water
Relevant O2 levels?
Oxygen Level
Physiological Effects and Safety Standards
21%
This is a normal, oxygen-rich atmosphere.
19.5%
This is the minimum percentage of oxygen for safe entry into the area as designated by Occupational Health and Safety.
18%
This is an oxygen-deficient atmosphere, as defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
17%
At this level, your breathing rate increases to compensate for lower oxygen content.
12%
You may experience dizziness, headache, and fatigue at this level.
9%
You rapidly lose consciousness at this level.
6%
Death occurs within minutes from respiratory and cardiovascular failure.
What is the role of positive pressure in the SCBA?
* When you wear a positive-pressure mask, positive pressure exists throughout your lungs as well as in the facepiece.
1 Positive pressure in the facepiece keeps out the toxic atmosphere.
2 The positive pressure in your lungs causes them to become hyperinflated. With more air in your lungs, the alveoli exchange gases more efficiently.
What safety considerations are required once a hazard control zone is established?
1 anyone entering the hot zone area must be equipped with full protective clothing and an SCBA
2 be included in the fire accountability and have Personal Alarm Safety System.
What are some negative effects of SCBA?
1 20 percent decrease in physical performance.
2 when you exhale into the mask, increased CO2 is brought in on the next inhalation which cause respirations to increase.
3 cylinder air is intensely dry
What triggers inhalation during regular breathing?
Elevated levels of CO2 in the blood causes muscular activity in the thoracic cavity and inhalation occurs.
What is the role of hemoglobin in breathing and what hazard exists in contaminated atmospheres?
Hemoglobin is responsible for binding and carrying gases in blood stream.
*CO bonds more strongly with hemoglobin than O2. It can be toxic and fatal at relatively low concentrations
How can a FF contribute to air management?
Controlled breathing involves a conscious effort to decrease air consumption by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.
What are 3 categories of Heat Stress?
Heat Cramps
Heat Exhaustion
Heat Stroke
What are the signs, symptoms and RX for Heat Cramps?
- Severe Muscle pain
- Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance
- rest and fluids.
