What is fire hose? (definition)
Fire hose identifies a type of flexible tube used by firefighters to move water under pressure from the supply source to a point where it is discharged
What are 5 charactersistics of fire hose?

  • 2 able to withstand high pressures
  • 3 smooth lining (reduce friction losses)
  • 4 be flexible (to permit space efficient loading)
  • 5 durable covering
What measurement gives a hose its size designation?
Inside diameter
What sizes of hose comprise small diameter hose? (from tkl different than book)
  • - 19, 25, 38, 44, 65 and 77 mm
  • (usually cut and coupled into 15 m lengths for convenience of handling and replacement)
What sizes of hose comprise large diameter hose?
- 125 mm
  • (usually cut and coupled in 30 m lengths)

    19 mm (3/4") synthetic, jacketed 25 mm brass couplings Weeps because it has no rubber lining - prevents it from heat damage in grass/brush fires
    Booster line
    25 mm (1 ") rubber lined, rubber covered 25 mm couplings Holds rigid shape, can be stored on a reel, can flow wter without pulling all the hose off the reel, carries low volume so typically used for small outdoor fires or dumpsters (not suitable for structure fires)
    Washout hose
    38 mm (1 1/2 ") rubber lined double jacket 38 mm red or green coupling Not carried on engines
    Attack line
