What is diffusion?
The process by which molecules of a substance move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.
What is osmosis?
The movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration through the cell membrane.
What is active transport?
Movement of molecules through the cell membrane using energy; usually from low concentration to high concentration
What does permeable mean?
Allows materials to pass through the membrane
What does selectively permeable mean?
A cell membrane that only allows certain materials to pass through and restricts other materials
What is cell division?
The process in which 1 cell divides into 2 cells;each daughter cell is identical to the parent cell
What is interphase?
Step where cell is performing all of its life functions; chromosomes aren't visible; at the end of the phase, chromosomes are duplicated
What is mitosis
Process in which the nucleus of the cell divides into 2 nuclei& the formation of 2 new daughter cells begins
What is prophase?
When cell division begins, chromosomes become visible; spindle fibers form; nuclear membrane breaks down; nucleolus disappears, centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell
What is metaphase?
Chromosomes attach to spindle fibers by centromere & chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
What is anaphase?
Centrfomeres split; chromatids split to form single chromosomes & chromosomes move to opposite sides of the cell
What is telophase?
Chromosomes uncoil & lose threadlike appearance; nuclear membrane forms; nucleoli appear; mitosis is complete
What is cytokinesis?
In animal cells , the cell membrane moves inward pinching the cell in & dividing the cytoplasm into 2 equal parts.
What is 1 simalarity between active transport & diffusion?
They both move materials somewhere else.
What are 2 differences between active transport & diffusion?
Diffusion doesn't use energy while active transport does & diffusion moves materials from high concentration to low concentration while active transport moves substances from low to high concentration
