Canto 1: what is happening to Dante in the very beginning of the story?Why does he go down to tour Hell with Virgil?

1) Dante is in a state of confusion, his friends in Heaven want to make sure Dante goes to Heaven and lives a life without sin. So they get God's permission to have Virgil take him through Hell.2) The people in Heaven who want Dante in Heaven with them, want Dante to go to Hell to see how bad it is as a way to convince him not to commit sin.

Canto 2: At first, Dante is hesitant about going through Hell. How does Virgil convince him to go?

Dante's lover, Beatrice is the one who started the idea of having him go through Hell, and when Dante realized how much Beatrice stilled cared for him (as well as people like the Virgin Mary) he feels more confident.

1) The opportunists. They are not punished, not quite in Hell but not in Heaven either. They did not do anything in their life (good or bad).2) Dante meets Pope Celistine here. Celistine quit the job as pope and then Boniface came in and ruined Florence.3) They are chased by a swarm of wasps and are stung constantly. Then their cuts are eaten by maggots.

1) people who have committed Carnal (sexual temptation/desire) 2) They are thrown around in a wind to reflect how they went all over the place/could't make up their minds3) Francesca and Paolo. They were lovers but were killed and now they are a constant reminder to each other that they are in Hell.

He assigns people to different circles in Hell by having people confess and then he wraps his tail around them to the number circle you are in.He got his job because he was a good, virtuous king and God trusted him with this job.

1) in circle 4: hoarders and wasters. in circle 5: wrathful and sullen2) circle 4: they must push a heavy boulder until they run into each other (then they start again) they hoarders and wasters mock each other toocircle 5: the wrathful beat each other up and the sullen are stuck in the river styx and they are trying to sing
