Canto 1: what is happening to Dante in the very beginning of the story?Why does he go down to tour Hell with Virgil?
1) Dante is in a state of confusion, his friends in Heaven want to make sure Dante goes to Heaven and lives a life without sin. So they get God's permission to have Virgil take him through Hell.2) The people in Heaven who want Dante in Heaven with them, want Dante to go to Hell to see how bad it is as a way to convince him not to commit sin.
