What is the classical curriculum?
A focus on memorization. A successful student could repeat what the instructor shared in class and most everything had a "right" answer.
In the colonial period a student started higher education at what age?
Around 14 - higher education came before our structured K-12 system. As the K-12 system become established the age of the student in higher education increased.
What is the difference between Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Alpha?
Phi Beta Kappa - 1st recorded fraternity but from a literary society. The initial organization of students for out of class engagement was around debate and literary clubs. Kappa Alpha was the first social fraternity.
Dartmouth Case
Established the distinction between public and private in 1819
1st Public Institution in US
University of Virginia - established by Thomas Jefferson
College campuses were physically built by whom in our society.
People of color physically built the majority of our college campuses but did not gain the benefits of that labor.
Yale Report
1828 - Discussion of the liberal education and the need to keep the classical curriculum. This is why you see a liberal arts institution - and the link with a general education curriculum. While the "classical curriculum" has changed - a general education curriculum still remains in place at a liberal arts institution.
Morril Act
1862 - Created 1st set of land grant colleges - A&M's; increased attendance by women
2nd Morrill Act
Aimed to show that race was not an admissions criterion; helped to establish 17 predominantly African American colleges.
Wisconsin Idea
1918- established state systems of higher education
GI Bill
Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 - support for veterans returning from WWII - largest growth in HE attendance
Buckley Act
1974 - establishment of FERPA
Spellings Report
2006 - started a focus on accountability but also called for restructuring around access and affordability
America's College Promise Act
2019 - Not passed - calls for tuition and fee-free community college
