Independent variable

The variable that is changed or altered in a controlled experiment. It is the manipulated variable. There is only one independent variable in a controlled experiment. It is what "I" alter.

Dependent variable
|
The variable that is being measured in response to the independent variable. It depends (or relies) on the independent variable. Normally a number

Scientific theory
|
An attempt to explain a pattern that is observed repeatedly in the natural world. They are vague ideas

Scientific law
|
A rule that describes a pattern in nature. Must be something that is observed repeatedly. The law stands until someone makes an observation that does not follow the law.
