In coagulopathies, it is contraindicated because it can cause the patient to bleed out, so do a clotting time test first

-slides, -towel, - clippers, - sterile prep, -blade, - biopsy needle, - sterile drape, - sterile gloves, - EDTA, -syringe, - glue

Put 1/2 ml of saline into a small EDTA tube and then it can be transfered to 3- 4 sm purple top tubes.... you will remove the needle and syringe to coat the syringe
Why do we use EDTA over heparin when coating a bone marrow syringe
EDTA is gentler on cells, heparin tends to distort cells

-trochanteric fossa of proximal femur, - proximal humerus, - dorsal illiac crest/ wing of ilium, - sternum (used mainly in horses), - rib
How do we make slides from a bone marrow aspirate
-place drops onto a slide and lean slides against a towel to let contaminants fall to the bottom (blood), - then do a compression smear (do lots of smears)
How do you obtain a bone marrow biopsy sample
-when the bone marrow needle is advanced without the styletand then is removed from the bone. The sample is dislodged from the needle and placed in formalin.
What should you never do when sending out bone marrow slides and biopsy for histopathology
-never send the slides and biopsy togther, send seperatly. - the formalin can deterate the cells on the slide
