What is Mitosis?
It's the process that ensures the same amount and kind of genetic material is transmitted from one generation to the next as the cells reproduce.
Name all the mitosis stages
Stages |
Where does Mitosis occur?
In every cell of an organism except sex cells
Why doesn't Mitosis occur in sex cells?
Because mitosis replicates a cell so that it can repair , for example, torn skin. If mitosis was to happen in sex cells, every person produced from the parent will look exactly the same as the parent.

Is crossing over (swapping of segments of DNA between homologous chromosomes) seen with mitosis?
No
Which stage does DNA replication occur?
Interphase
How many chromosomes does the parent cell have in mitosis and how many daughter cells are produced?
46 and 2
What is meiosis?
It happens when it's time to reproduce an organism.
Draw a diagram of meiosis and label it
Labelled diagram |
Where does meiosis occur?
In all sex cells
What is the fibre called that separates the chromosomes?
Spindle fibre
Crossing over occurs during which stage?
Prophase 1
A cell with a diploid number of 24 undergoes meiosis, how many chromosomes are in each daughter cell?
12
During meiosis the resulting gametes have _______ the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
Half
