Name 3 Organic molecules
Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins
Name some carbohydrates
Sugars, starches
There are 3 groups of Carbohydrates, name them
Monosaccharides, Disaccharides and Polysaccharides
Monosaccharides
Single sugars
Disaccharides
Two sugar units joined together
Polysaccharides
Mamy sugar groups joined together, either in a long chain or as branched structures.
Name some foods with carbohydrates
Pasta, sugar and potatoes.
Lipids
Compounds that are non-soluble in water
What are some Lipids
Fats, steroids, phospholipids.
Triglycerides
The most common form of fat found in nature, made up of 3 fatty acid groups attached to a glycerol molecule.
Saturated fats
Found mostly in animals, contain hydrogen.no double bonds-they can pack tightly together forming a dense mass of fat. usually solid at room temp.
Unsaturated Fat
Primarily plant fats, double bonds -can kink in their structure, preventing them from forming tight masses. they tend to stay liquid at room temp.
What are amino acids
The units that makes up proteins.
What are proteins made up of
Amino acids, which bond together with peptide bonds to form chains called polypeptides.
How many known amino acids are there
20- our body can synthesize only 12 of them-the remaining 8 are essential but must be gained thru food.
