Front Back
Anterior
The surface that moves forward during locomotion.

toward the front in all animals; toward the head end in 4-legged animals.
Posterior
The opposite of anterior.

toward the rear in all animals, toward the tail end in 4-legged animals.
Lateral
The side; toward the side
Medial
The midline; toward the midline axis
Dorsal
The back surface (in all animals). the same as posterior in humans
Ventral
Opposite of dorsal.

the belly surface in all animals, the same as the anterior in humans.
Distal
Preferred directional term.

farther away from a reference point--term generally used to describe portions of a limb compared to some other portion of the same limb; using the torso as a reference pt.
Proximal
Preferred directional term.

closer to a reference point; term generally used to describe portions of a limb compared to some other portion of the same limb, using the torso as a reference pt.
Cephalo- or cranial
Toward the head or brain; same as anterior (in 4-legged animals) and superior (in humans)
Caudal
Toward the tail; same as posterior (in 4 legged animals)
Superior
Above or upward (same as cranial in humans, same as dorsal in 4-legged animals)
Inferior
Below or downward; toward the feet (in humans), same as ventral (in 4 legged animals)
Coelomate
Having a coelem or a body cavity
Acoelomate
Lacking a coelom or body cavity
Longitudinal
Parallel to the long axis of an organ or of the body; generally used when referring to making a cut--either on a dissection specimen or on a slide specimen
