Describe the relationship between crop yields and population
Yields have kept pace with the population. And, we have not increased agricultural land yet (if anything taken away ag. land)
What are some factors for arable land for crops?
Water, temperature and limitations
Amount of arable land has been dropping over the years.
If the amount of biofuels increase... what will that take away from?
Food production (ex. ethanol)
Global warming=
Hockey stick prediction
What can we do to improve biofuel production?
Look to cellulose.
for example, the cell walls.
Or, miscanthus plantation (a relative of switchgrass)
What is the efficiency of a regular incadescent bulb?
2%
What does Norway have?
A global seed vault to store old seeds to store genetic richness of old plants
What is an example of classic breeding?
Corn was created from teosinte [by picking the biggest seeds (best traits) and breeding them together]
What are some benefits of genetically modified organisms?
It allows us to put the best traits into plants. For instance, Vitamin A was put into white rice to make "golden rice."
What is the relationship between morphological complexity and genome size?
There isn't one. Morphological complexity is not proportional to genome size
Are there some genes that can be found in plants, but also are the genes that cause mutations/ diseases in humans?
Yes
Like humans, plants have....
Sense.... 1) Sight 2) Touch 3) Heat and cold 4) Gravity 5) Smell 6) Taste
but... have no sense organs!!
Unlike humans, plants...
1. make their own energy 2. make own amino acids, lipids, vitamins 3. make lots of polymers and chemicals
What else do plants make?
1) wood and paper 2) fiber 3) rubber 4) etc
