Define Cellular Respiration
Oxidation of organic molecules into energy in the form of ATP
Anaerobic Respiration vs. Aerobic Respiration
Anaerobic is respiration that occurs without the use of oxygen (Ex. Fermentation (yeast), Lactic Acid animals)
Aerobic uses Oxygen
What is the overall reaction in Fermentation in plants/yeast?
Glucose + ADP-----> Ethanol + CO2 + ATP + heat
What is the overall reaction in Fermentation in animals?
Glucose + ADP------> Lactic Acid + ATP + heat
What is the overall reaction for Aerobic Respiration?
Glucose + O2 + ADP ------->CO2 + H2O + ATP + heat
Why does Fermentation occur?
It occurs when oxygen isn't present, or when the energy required exceeds the oxygen that is available (temporary bursts of energy)
Where and when in respiration does fermentation fit?
Fermentation occurs at the end of glycolysis. NADH's dump their electrons in order to oxidize more molecules. The dumped electrons bind to pyruvate and form lactic acid in animals.
What are two methods of fermentation and their differences?
Yeast/Plant and Animal. Yeast produces ethanol and CO2, while Animal produces Lactic Acid.
What were the effects of MgSO4, NaF, Glucose in experiment? Activator? Inhibitor? What was measured and how?
Glucose was needed for glycolysis. MgSO4 was an activator, NaF was an inhibitor. CO2 was measured by height of bubbles.
In the Respiring Pea Experiment.... what were the purposes of : the peas?, the KOH pellets?, effects of heat?, why heat killed peas?
Peas: aerobically respirate
KOH: to remove the expelled CO2 in order to only measure Oxygen consumed
Heat: the warmer the water, the more respiration
Dependent Variable vs Independent Variable
Independent is always on x axis (ex. amount of fertilizer)
Dependent is always on Y axis (ex. height of grass growth. 'Dependent' on the Independent variable)
Name these parts? Name their function?
Answer 12
.
Where is sugar generated in plants and where is it stored?
