Diffusion
Molecules (solutes) move through solutions from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Heat and pressure also affect diffusion (but usually are the same)
Density's effect on Diffusion?
Dense slows diffusion (agar vs. water)
More molecules to get through |
Pheynolphthalein
Reacts with Base PH turning PINK
Cannot pass through membrane because it is POLAR |
Iodine
Reacts with Starch
Passes through membrane because it is Non-Polar |
NaOH
Turns Phenyolphthalein pink
Passes through membrane because it is Non-Polar |
Starch
Reacts with Iodine
Doesn't pass through membrane because it is Polar |
Water Potential
Combined effects of concentration and pressure that affect the flow of water. Water will flow from high water potential to low water potential. Both high water concentration and high pressure increase water potential.
Hypertonic Solution
High molecule concentration of solutes. Water flows TO this.
Hypotonic Solution
Low molecular concentration of solutes. Water flows AWAY from this.
Plasmolysis
Shrinking cytoplasm of a plant cell due to diffusion of water out of a cell and into a hypertonic solution.
Isotonic Solution
Evenly distributed molecule concentration of solutes. Water has even flow in/out.
