Knee-jerk reflex
|
A simple neuron reflex. tap below knee pulls on patella, stretches muscle, activates stretch receptor, so when quad contracts inhibits contraction of flexor and extends limb via extensor. if both flexor and extendor contracted could rip muscles

Ganglia
|
Place where a lot of cell bodies of neurons are. in brain, ganglia ate called nuclei

Interneuron
|
Neuron that connects to other neurons. in the knee-jerk reflex the interneuron is inhibitory which inhibits the flexor

What is the function of the knee-jerk reflex?
|
To help us with balance/help us move. the doctor tests this to test nerves for neurodegenerative diseases

Signal
|
Nerve impulses are conducted along a neuron from dendrite to cell body to axon hillock to axon

Dendrites
|
Projections fro the cell body (part of cell membrane). receive information from other neurons

Cell body
|
Contains nucleus and organelles (proteins synthesized here). neurons can also get information from the cell body.

Axon
|
Nerve impuses propogates along single axon away from cell body

Myelin sheath
|
Helps speed up flow of signal

Axon hillock
|
Where axon joins the cell body. the point of transmission and integration of nerve signals. the decision to fire is made int he axon hillock - need to reach threshold potential before axon fires

Synaptic terminal
|
Nerve ending that relays signals via neurotransmitters to next neuron. attach to dendrites OR cell body of other neurons

Synapse
|
Place where synaptic terminals of one neuron come into contact with another neuron

Presynaptic/postsynaptic
|
Presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons are relative to a given synapse. postsynaptic cells respond to presynaptic cell by firing or not.

Two types of nerve signals
|
1. electrical (within a neuron) and 2. chemical (between neurons)

Nerve signals within a neuron. all cell menbranes have an electrical potential.
