What are the four steps involved in a four-stroke engine?
|
1. Intake Stroke2. Compression Stroke3. Power Stroke4. Exhaust Stroke

What does the intake stroke involve?
|
Draws air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber
(intake valve is open at this point) |

What does the compression stroke involve?
|
Prepares the air/fuel mixture for combustion
(both valves are closed and pistons slides up and compresses the trapped mixture) |

What does the power stroke involve?
|
Produces the energy to operate the engine by igniting the spark plug that creates the air/fuel mixture to burn. This creates pressure that pushes the piston down forcing the crankshaft to turn.(Both valves are closed at this point)

What does the exhaust stroke involve?
|
Removes the burned gases
(exhaust valve is open and the pistons slides up to push the gases out of the chamber) |

What are the three types of Fuel Systems?

1. Carburetor2. Gas Injected3. Diesel Injected

What does the Carburetor System have that the other fuel systems do not?
|
A carburetor that controls how much fuel is used
(Fuel is drawn out of the fuel pump and delivers it to the carburetor, The intake stroke draws the mixture from the intake manifold into the engine) |

Whats involved in a gas injected system?
|
Uses a computer engine sensor and electrically operated injector (fuel valves) to meter fuel into the engine.
(Electric fuel pump keeps constant fuel pressure at the injector and the computer opens the injectors for the correct amount of time) |

Whats involved in a diesel injected system?
|
Mechanical system that forces diesel oil directly into the combustion chamber
(Diesel engines do not use spark plugs or a throttle valve but uses high compression stroke pressure to heat the air- the air is squeezed until its hot enough to ignite the fuel) |

What does the coolant system do?
|
The water pump forces coolant (a water/antifreeze mixture) through the engine.

What does the lubrication system do?
|
Reduces friction and wear between internal engine parts and circulates filtered motor oil to high friction parts

|
Includes the 1. Ignition System2. Starting System3. Charging System4. Lighting System5 Other systems that would required electricity

Primary responsibility of the Ignition system?
|
Need to ignite the air/fuel mixture.
(Produces extremely high voltage that operates the spark plugs) |

What does the starting system do?
|
Its an electrical motor that rotates the crankshaft until the engine starts and runs on its own.
(as soon as the engine starts running the starting system shuts off) |
