Neoclassicism 1750-1860s Edmonia Lewis. Forever Free, 1867 -One of the most fascinating Neoclassical artists is a woman sculptor, Edmonia Lewis. Born of an African American father and Chippewa Indian mother, her works often reflect her African American and Native American heritage. - Forever Free is a monument to the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, issued by Lincoln during the Civil War to abolish slavery in the United States. The man, still bearing his shackles, and the woman look up to the heavens in gratitude for liberation.

Romanticism 1750-1860s Francisco Goya. Third of May, 1808.- The most horrific and famous of the series is this work recording the events of May 3rd 1808. The French had rounded up citizens in the streets of Madrid the previous day, some of whom had nothing to do with the uprising, and without any interrogation or trial, had them taken outside the city walls and executed to make an example of the rioters and terrify the Spanish into submission. - The French executioners are presented as faceless killing machines remorselessly leaning into their task. Those awaiting their turn cower in terror. The victim who is being shot stands in a crucifix like pose, and his shirt outshines the lamp illuminating the scene, underscoring his innocence.

The Raft of the Medusa, 1818-1819. - Make sure you get a sense of the political overtones of the work; this painting about the tragic loss of life at sea from a blundering captain’s mistake was a thinly veiled criticism of the ineptitude of King Louis XVIII’s reign.
