Manifest Destiny

An imperialist term first used in 1845 to urge the annexation of Texas. Encouraged expansion in the United states and was later used to encourage American Settlement of European colonial and Indian lands in the great plains and in the far west.

Mountain Men
|
Men who were influenced by the fur trade industry. they moved to live primative lives in the wildernessand become fur trappers. They were the first whites to find routes in the rockies and they pioneered trails that would later be used to reach the oregon country and california.

Battle of the Alamo
|
Turning point in the war of Texas Independence. After a 13 day siege of the San Antonio Mission, Mexican General Santa Anna led his troops in an attack on the mission against the Texans. All but 2 texans were killed. Davy Crockey and Jim Bowie were among the brave texan fighters.

Lone Star Republic
|
The name that Texas gave itself after becoming an independent nation after the war of Texas Independence. Constitution was drafted in 1836, slavery ok, no free blacks, Sam Houston was president, voted on the annexation into the united states.

Winfield Scott
|
American General in the Mexican-American war and led the capture of Mexico City, which ended the war. He used his populiarity from military success to run for president under the Whig Party.

General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna

Mexican General in the Mexican-American war (1846-1848). Led the attack on the San Antonio Mission at the Battle of the Alamo and was captured in 1848 at the Battle of the San Jacinto

Bear Flag Republic
|
During the Mexican-American war, a group of californians captured an area in california from the Mexicans called Sonoma, and declared that it was a part of the republic of California. Flag had a bear on it.

ID Santa Fe Trail
|
Trail that was created due to heavy trade from Santa Fe to Missouri.

ID Oregon Trail
|
Trail that led settlers from Independence, Missouri to the oregon territory. Wagon caravans/trains were the mode of transportation and it was mostly used from the 1840's to the 1860's

ID Mormon Trail
|
Led from Nauvoo, IL to Salt Lake City, Utah. Before the Mexican-American war, Utah was a territory of Mexico. Many Mormons wer led by Brigham Young on this path.

ID Brigham Young
|
After the death of Mormon leader and founder Joesph Smith, young became the leader of the mormons. He informed the Illinois government that the mormons would all be leaving the state, and they left via the mormon trail to the Great Salt Lake of Utah. After Utah became a territory of the USA, Young became the governor of the territory and kept the mormon population free from federal authority.
