Part of the trunk
lies b/w diaphragm and pelvis
Lined with peritoneum a serous membrane
|
Abdomen
|
What are the layers that cover the abdomen?
|
From Superficial to Deep:
Skin, Subcutaneous tissue, Muscles or fascia, Extraperitoneal tissue, Peritoneum
|
What are the muscles of the anterolateral abdominal wall?
|
Rectus abdominis Extrernal Oblique (outer) Internal Oblique (middle) Transversus Abdominis (inner) |
Nerves that innervate the anterolateral abdominal wall and groin are:
|
*Thoraco-abdominal nerves
*Subcostal nerves
*First lumbar which divides into iliohypogastric and ilio-inguinal nerves
|
Axillary lymph nodes (above umbilicus) and superficial inguinal nodes (below umbilicus)
|
Lymphatics of the anterolateral abdominal wall and groin
|
What does NAVEL stand for?
|
N: femoral Neve
A: femoral Artery
V: femoral Vein
E: Empty space
L: Lymphatic
|
What is a common venous puncture site?
|
In the inguinal/femoral canal (NAVEL)
|
A defect in the abdominal wall resulting in a protrusion of abdominal contents.
Groin is the most common.
|
Hernias
|
Causes: chronic increased intra abdominal pressure, as a result of cough, constipation, prostate enlargement, or colon cancer
|
Hernias
|
Origin: pubic symphysis and pubic crest
Insertion: ribs 5,6,7-costal cartilages and xiphoid process
Action: 1. Flexion of trunk
2. Compression and support of abdominal viscera
Nerve: thoracoabdominal
|
Rectus Abdominis |
O: Ribs-lower 8 (5-12)
I: linea alba, pubis, anterior iliac crest
A: Bilaterally:
1. flexion of trunk
2. compression & support of abdominal viscera
Unilaterally:
1. lateral flexion of trunk
2. rotation of trunk to opposite side
N: thoracoabdominal and subcostal
|
External Oblique
|
O: inguinal ligament, anterior iliac crest, thoracolumbar aponeurosis
I: lower 4 ribs (9-12)-costal cartilages, abdominal aponeurosis, linea alba
A: Bilaterally:
1. flexion of trunk
2. compression & support of abdominal viscera
Unilaterally:
1. lateral flexion of trunk
2. rotation of trunk to same side
N: thoracoabdominal
|
Internal Oblique
|
O: inguinal ligament, iliac crest, thoracolumbar aponerosis, ribs 7-12. internal surface of costal cartilages
I: abdominal aponeurosis, linea alba, pubis
A: compression & support of abdominal viscera
N: thoracoabdominal
Deepest of all abdominal muscles, runs crosswise
|
Transversus Abdominis
|
