What makes up integumentary system?
Hair, Nails, Skin, and Cutaneous glands
Skin alone is called...
Integument
Collectively nails, hair, and cutaneous glands are called...
Accessory Organs
2 layers of skin:
Epidermis - stratified squamous
Dermis - deeper CT layer
Hypodermis - not part of skin
What are major functions of skin?
Resistance to trauma and infection, Water retention, Synthesis of Vit D, Sensation, Thermoregulation, Nonverbal Comm.
Describe Epidermis
Keratinized, strat. sq. epi.
surface is dead cells packed w/keratin
avascular, depends on CT
sparse nerve endings
List cell types in epidermis (5)
Stem cells, Keratinocytes, Melanocytes, Tactile/Merkel cells, Dendritic/Langerhans cells
What is a stem cell?
Undifferentiated cells that undergo mitosis and produce keratinocytes, found only in stratum basale
What is keratinocyte?
Majority of epidermal cells, synthesize keratin
What is melanocyte?
Only in strat. basale, synthesize melanin, long branching processes
What is tactile/merkel cell?
Few in number, receptors for sense of touch, found in basal layer of epidermis, associated w/underlying dermal nerve fiber
What is dendritic/langerhans cells?
Found in 2 layers of epidermis. strat. spinosum andgranulosum, macrophages that stand guard against pathogens that penetrate skin
Name layers of epidermis (superficial to deep)
Stratum corneum, s. lucidum, s.granulosum, s. spinosum, s. basale
Describe Stratum Corneum
Consistus of up to 30 layers of dead, scaly, keratinized cels that form a durable surface layer resistant to abrasion, penetration and water loss
Describe Stratum Lucidum
Thin, transluscent zone seen only in thick skin, keratinocytes are densely packed with eleidin
