What do the appendicular muscles control?
The movements of the upper and lower limbs, stabalize and control movements of pectoral and pelvic girdles
What groups are the pectoral girdle and upper limbs organized into?
1) muscles that move the pectoral girdle 2) muscles that move the glenohumeral joint/arm 3) arms and forearm muscles that move the elbow joint/forearm 4) forearm muscles that move the wrist joit, fingers 5) intrinsic muscles of the hand
Where do the muscles of the pectoral girdle originate?
The axial skeleton
Where do the muscles of the pectoral girdleinsert on?
On the scapula and clavicle
What do the muscles of the pectoral girdledo?
Both stabalize the scapula and move it to increase the arm's angle of movements
What do the superficial muscles of the thorax do?
Elevation, depression, protraction, or retraction
What are the anterior thoracic muscles?
Pectoralis minor, serratus anterior, and subclavius
Pectoralis minor
Thin flat, triangular muscle deep to the pectoralis major
What does the pectoralis minor do?
Helps depress &protract (pull anteriorly) the scapula
What happens when the pectoralis minor is contracting?
When your shoulders are hunched forward
Serratus anterior
Large flat, fan shaped muscle positioned btwn the ribs and scapula
What does the serratus anterior do?
Prime mover (agonist) in scapula protraction. helps stabalize the scapula against the posterior side of the rib cage
Subclavius
Small, cylindrical muscle
What does the subclavius do?
Extends from the 1st rib to the clavicle main action:stabalize and depress the clavivle
What are the posterior thoracic muscles?
The levator scapulae, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor, and trapezius
