1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of airport terminal geometry?
With rectangular or linear manner with the goal of maintaining short distances between the vehicle curb and aircraft parking that existed with unit terminals. Disadvantages become evident as the length of the terminal building increases such as the walking distances.
1. How did the advent of APM systems affect the construction of airport terminals?
It connects main terminal buildings with concourses; the main advantage of the remote satellite concept is that one or more satellite facilities may be constructed and expanded when necessary while providing sufficient space for aircraft taxi operations between the main terminal building and satellites.
1. What are some of the various terminal design concepts that have existed over the history of civil-use airport?
Single unit terminals- contains all required passenger processing facilities for a given air carrier in a single unit building
Combined unit terminals- two or more airlines would share a common building, slightly larger than a simple unit terminal, but have separate passenger and baggage processing facilities.
Multiple unit terminal- separate buildings were constructed for each airline, each building behaving as its own unit terminal
1. What is the mobile lounge concept?
Used to transport passengers to and from the terminal building to aircraft parked on the apron.
1. What are off-airport terminals? What potential do they have in the future of airport terminals?
Off airport terminals have the notion that certain passenger processes, such as ticketing and baggage check-in, and certainly automobile parking, did not need to be within any proximity of aircraft.
1. What is a Gantt chart? How can Gantt charts help airport management?
A graphical representation of the utilization of aircraft gates over a given period of time. It can visually identify inefficiencies in gate utilization and potential conflicts.
1. What are the different processes that comprise the passenger handling system at airport terminals?
· Flight interface- provides the link between the aircraft gates and passenger processing facilities
· Passenger processing- required to prepare departing passengers to leave the airport for ground transportation to their ultimate destinations
· Access/processing interface- coordinate the transfer of passengers between ground transportation and the terminal buiding
· Access/egress interface- movement of passengers and ground vehicles between origins and destinations in the community and the airport property
1. What are the different types of gate-usage agreements that airports negotiated with aircraft operators? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of agreement?
· Exclusive-use agreement- air carrier retains sole authority to use a particular gate or set of gates at an airport terminal
· Shared-use agreements- air carriers and other aircraft schedule use of gates in coordination with airport management and ther air carriers serving the airport
· Preferential-use agreements- one carrier has preferential use of the gate. Should that air carrier not be using the gate during some period of the day, other air carriers subscribing to the agreement may use the gate.
1. What are CUTE systems?
Common-use terminal equipment- a computer based system that can accommodate the operating systems of any air carrier that shares the check-in facility.
1. What are FIS? What passengers typically require FIS?
Federal inspection Services- passport inspection, inspection of baggage, and collection of duties on certain imported items, and sometimes inspection for agricultural material, illegal drugs, or other restricted items.
1. What are MPOs? What authority do MPOs have over airport ground access?
Metropolitan planning organizations- relied upon to bring together the general needs of urban transportation and the specialized needs of the airports by the development of comprehensive transportation plans for metropolitan or regional areas as a whole.
1. What are some of the most significant changes in airport security as a result of the events of September 11, 2001?
TSA was adopted by the Department of Homeland Security and made all homeland defense under the jurisdiction of the DHS.
1. What is the organizational structure of the Transportation Security Administration?
Incorporated into the organizational structure of the US Department of Transportation, to be operated in close coordination with all other transportation administrations including the FAA.
1. What are the various security-sensitive areas found at airports as defined by Transportation Security Regulations?
Secured area- airport security are carried out
Sterile area- provides passengers access to boarding aircraft and to which the access general is controlled by TSA
SIDA area- must have a SIDA card to enter
Exclusive area- individual access points such as hangars
1. What is required for an applicant to receive an SIDA badge?
Persons must complete an application, and undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history records check, and TSA security threat assessment.
