What happens to the action potential if you have a strong stimulus?
A strong stimulus will cause the firing of action potentials to increase
Absolute Refractory Period
The sodium channels have to re-set and can only do this once the membrane is hyperpolarized. During this period NO action potential can FIRE.
How long is the absolute refractory period?
It is as long as the duration of an action potential.
Relative Refractory Period
A larger than normal depolarization needed to cause an action potential to fire.
During the rising phase what is going on?
During the rising phase, the sodium will flow into the cell to depolarize membrane
During the falling phase what is going on?
During the falling phase, the potassium channels are open to let K flow out of cell...to repolarize cell.
What is the threshold frequency that needs to be reached in order to depolarize a neuron?
-40mV.
Which gates open fast and/or slow involved in action potentials?
The fast opening gates are the sodium and the slow opening are the potassium
When Sodium rushes into the cell at the start of an depolarization, what attracts it in?
The negativity of the membrane potential.
How does an action potential spread to the rest of the axox of a neuron?
The sodium that came in during the depoloration phase will cause the memrbane in front of it to depolarize...it is like a cycle
Why can an action potential not travel backwards?
Bc of the refractory period..it will not allow another action potential to occur
What affects the conduction of an action potential ? What two factors?
The thickness of the axon ..the thicker the axon the faster the transmission adn myelination.
Where does an action potential begin?
The axon hillock!
