Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by maintenance of an abnormally low body weight, a distorted body image, intense fear of gaining weight, and in females, amenorrhea. May result in serious medical conditions or death. Two general subtypes: Binge-eating/purging Restrictive type
Binge-eating/purging of Anorexia Nervosa
A sub-type of Anorexia Nervosa characterized by frequent episodesof binge eathing an purging.
Restrictive type of Anorexia Nervosa
A sub-type of Anorexia Nervosa characterized by total restriction of food intake.
Bulimia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating followed by self-induced purging, accompanied by overconcern with body weight and shape. - Weight usually maintained w/normal range - May result in serious medical conditions
Binge Eating Disorder
An eating disorder that is characterized by recurrent binge eating w/o compensatory purging. Classified as a potential disorder requiring futher study. - Compulsive eaters - Typically affects obese women
Obesity
A condition of excess body fat; generally defined by a BMI of 30 or higher than normal range.
Dysomnia
Sleep disorders involving distrurbances in the amount, quality, or timing of sleep.
Insomnia
Difficulties falling asleep, remaining asleep, or achieving restorative sleep.
Primary Insomnia
A sleep disorder characterized by chronic or persistent insomnia not caused by another psychological or physical disorder or by the effects of drugs or medications.
Hypersomnia
A pattern of excessive sleepiness during the day.
Narcolepsy
A sleep disorder characterized by sudden, irresistible episodes of sleep.
Catoplexy
During sleep attacks, the person may experience sudden loss of muscular control. Typically follows a strong emotional reaction such as joy or anger. Can range from mild weakness in the legs to a sudden loss of muscle control resulting in a sudden collapsing of the person.
Sleep Apnea
A breathin-related sleep disorder in which the person may temporarily stop breathing as many as 500 times during a night's sleep. Loud snoring.
Parasomnia
Sleep disorder involving abnormal behaviors or psychological events that occur during sleep or while falling asleep. - Nightmare Disorder - Sleep Terror Disorder - Sleepwalking Disorder
Nightmare Disorder
A form of parasomnia sleep disorder. Characterized by recurrent awakinings to frightening nightmares.
