What is the nervous system
It is the master controlling and communicating system of the body
How do nervous cells communicate? is it rapid or slow? specific or nonspecific?
By electrical and chemical signals ....they are very rapid and specific and almost cause an immediate response
What are the three overlapping functions of the nervous system
1. sensory input ....... 2. integration ...... 3. motor output
What is sensory input
It is information gathered by sensory receptors about internal and external changes
What is integration
Processing and interpretation of the sensory input (deciding what should be done)
What is motor output
The activation of effector organs (muscles and glands) to cause a response
What are the 2 principal parts the nervous system is divided into
-central nervous system ....-peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS (basic)
It consists of the brain and spinal cord of the dorsal body cavity... it is the integration and control center of the nervous system..... it interprets sensory input and dictates motor output (based on reflexes, current conditions and past experience)
What is the PNS (basic)
Part of the nervous system that is outside of the CNS .... consists mainly of nerves (bundles of axons) that extend from the brain and spinal cord and ganglia (neuron cell bodies) ....."spinal nerves" carry impulses to and from the spinal cord ........"cranial nerves" carry impulses to and from the brain
What are the two functional subdivisions of the peripheral nervous system
-sensory (afferent) division .....-motor (efferent) division
What is the sensory (afferent) division? what does it consist of?
It carries toward the brain...-it consists of nerve fibers (axons) that convey impulses to the CNS from sensory receptors located throughout the body
What are the 2 types of fibers that make up the sensory division
-somatic sensory fibers (convey impulses from the skin, skeletal muscles and joints to CNS).......- visceral sensory fibers (convey impulses from the visceral organs/ organs within the ventral body cavity)
What is the motor (efferent) division
"carries away"........it transmits impulses from the CNS to effector organs (muscles and glands) which causes them to contract or secrete
What are the 2 divisions of the motor (efferent) division
-somatic nervous system ........-autonomic nervous system
What is the somatic nervous system
-it is composed of somatic motor nerve fibers that conduct impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles......- also known as the voluntary nervous system because it allows conscious control of the skeletal muscles
