What is another name for joints
Articulations
What are joints
Sites where two or more bones meet
What is the function of joints
Give skeleton mobility and hold skeleton together....joints are the weakest point of the skeleton, the more moveable it is, the least stable
How are joints classified
By structure (material binding bones together) and by function (amount of movement allowed at joint)
What are the structural classifications of a joint
-fibrous...-cartilaginous...-synovial.........synovial joints are the only ones with a joint cavity
What are the functional classifications of joints
-synarthroses (immovable)...- amphiarthroses (slightly movable) .......-diarthroses (freely movable)
What are some facts about fibrous joints
-bones joined by dense fibrous connective tissue....-no joint cavity...-most are immovable...-movement depends on length of CT....all are synarthrotic
What are the 3 types of fibrous joints
- suture (synostoses - all sutures are fused).....- syndesmoses (connected by ligament) .....-gomphoses
What are some facts about cartilaginous joints
-bones united by cartilage...-no joint cavity...-not highly movable
What are the 2 types of cartilaginous joints
-synchondroses (hyaline) , all are synarthrotic, ex: epiphyseal plate and the 1st costal cartilage....-symphyses (fibrocartilage), amphiarthrotic, Ex: intervertebral discs and pubic symphysis
What are some facts about synovial joints
-bones are separated by fluid filled joint cavity....-all are diarthrotic...-include almost all limb joints
What are the general features of a synovial joint (6)
1 articular cartilage (hyaline cartilage covers bone surface)........2. joint cavity (a space that contains a sml amount of synovial fluid, unique only to synovial joints) .....3. articular capsule .... 4. synovial fluid......5. reinforcing ligaments....6. nerves and blood vessels
What are the different range of motions allowed by synovial joints
-nonaxial (slipping movement)....-uniaxial (movement in one plane)....-biaxial (movement in 2 planes).....-multiaxial (movement in all 3 planes)
What are the 3 general types of movement allowed by synovial joints
-gliding.....- angular .......-rotation
What is gliding movements
-one flat bone surface glides or slips over another similar surface......ex: intercarpal joints, intertarsal joint
