Front Back
What particles contribute to the mass of an atom?
The nucleus, the proton, the neutron, and the electron.
In the periodic table what is true about elements in the same column?
They have similar properties.
What is a molecule?
A group of two or more atoms that are chemically joined to create a single unit.
What are the properties of metals,semi-metals, and non-metals?
Metals are shiny, bendable, can stretch and conduct electricity, Non-Metals are an element usually in the gas form, that can't bend, stretch, or conduct electricity. Semi-Metals are elements that are like metals in some way and non-metals in other ways.
What does the atomic number mean?
The atomic number is the number of protons in an element, extensively the number of electrons because in an element the number of protons and the number of electrons, must be the same.
Why is Carbon important for living things?
Carbon helps build fat tissue to store energy, helps build muscle and helps living things grow and develop, by creating DNA.
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken apart chemically into other substances.
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element.
What is a nucleus?
The structure in the center of an atom that contains the protons and neutrons.
What is a proton?
A positively charged small particle.
What is a neutron?
A small particle with no charge.
What is an electron?
A negatively charged atomic particle that moves in the space around the nucleus.
What is true in all elements?
Number of protons = number of electrons.
What is a compound?
A pure substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined.
What is a Scanning Tunneling Microscope(STM)?
A powerful electron microscope microscope that can form pictures of atoms.
